Field Operation

Guatemala

Guatemala is located in one of the most violent regions of Latin America. The country faces situations of high complexity such as the social and economic inequality, racism and the exclusion of women, endemic poverty, malnutrition, low levels of health and education coverage, high levels of unemployment and high rates of violence and insecurity.

Throughout 2022 and the beginning of 2023, an increase in violence and insecurity was noted, which continues to impact thousands of people. The consequences of climate change are also causing a food insecurity crisis in the dry corridor area, affecting around 25% of the population.

Protection Issues

The main protection risks in the country include gender-based violence and violence against women, recruitment and sexual violence against children and adolescents; attacks on human rights defenders and indigenous peoples, including discrimination, criminalisation and denial of the legitimate exercise of their work; structural denial of access to specialised, differentiated and quality resources, opportunities and services; and restrictions on access to territory and to the international protection system.
